Liberty

Michael is an expert in the field of hand drawn tromp l’oeil. He has worked with Liberty Prints on many of its art fabric collections. All designs have been rendered in colour pencil and are drawn from real objects. They are put into perfect repeat to the dimensions specified. His first collection was alongside that of Grayson Perry.

The charming prints have included dandelion heads, marbles, dominos, ribbons, Manga characters taken from the coat of arms and embroidery motifs.

The Crown

‘The Crown’s’, Princess Margaret played by Vanessa Kirby wears an exquisite dress made from silk fabric that Michael designed for Liberty. We now have royal connections, well nearly.

The Crown is an award winning Netflix drama about the early years of Princess Elizabeth and her transition into the Queen.

Michael says, ‘the design itself is of hand drawn ruffles and ruches of fabric. I researched a lot of classical Greek and Victorian marble sculpture to put together the fully repeating design without the computer. The design tested my powers of repeat that I learnt at both Winchester School of Art and the Royal college of Art.’

Thank you to Michele Clapton and Clare Ramsell, who designed and constructed the garment.
